While Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead are Rands best known novels, my personal favorite is We The Living. It is as close to an autobiography as Rand ever came and I think the best story she ever wrote.
I am far from being upper class. My family is as white trash as they come and I have never made more then $20,000 a year. I was raised by a single mom on welfare and would not have been able to eat lunch at school or see a doctor without help from the government.
Ayn Rand's rugged individualism sounds like the American Way that I was taught by my Grandmother and her brothers.

anyway, mrs ozzie and i settled back to watching the euro song contest which is in its 50th year.
The only thing that makes me sorry to be an American is not getting to see the Eurovison Song Contest. The first time I heard of the contest was while watching a parody on the Benny Hill show in the 70's. I have been wanting to see the real thing for over 25 years.

Mimi Rogers and David Duchovny starred in a movie called, "The Rapture" They play a couple of swingers who get religion and alter their lives. Duchovny is killed at his job by a disgruntled employee and Rogers goes off into the desert to wait for Jesus. Just when you think these religious fanatics are as insane as Hollywood portrays them, the Rapture comes! If that were not shocking enough the ending had me gasping, oh... my... god!

Ayn Rand was no saint. She was the greatest mind of the twentieth century but as all humans was not able to live up to her ideals all the time.
Does Thomas Jefferson owning slaves negate the principles enshrined in the Declaration of Independence?

Ayn Rand was THE champion of the individual when collectivism was king. I recognize her faults and try not to repeat similar mistakes. I am not always consistant but I do my best and continue to improve. To me Ayn Rand is the begining of the discussion and not the end of the discussion.
The Objectivist Center in Washington, DC and the Sense of Life Objectivists in New Zealand take Ayn Rand's philosophy to places she herself did not have time to ponder or chose not to address such as family issues and child rearing.

"Ethical egoism" is not a callous disregard for others. Ethical egoism allows for helping others if an individual wants to help others but recognizes there is no obligation or duty to help others. Sacrificing your self for others is always self destructive.
